We were on the set of an up coming epic of a scene at a nineteeth century opera house in Paris. The color scheme and overall decorating of the auditorium demanded an overwhelming amount of hand painting and other chores. The logistics of the paint buckets was critical to the pressing schedule we were on. The head of construction told us how the use of a tote mixer here and there would drastically cut down on the amount of time it took to refill buckets by having them close at hand.
I never thought something so simple would save the day.

I was having an interesting conversation with a buddy,who is in the event staging business. He was raving about how helpful and time saving his event management software was. I began to add up the facts and decided that this type of software may be only a tweak or two away from being used in the movie business. He thought I was on to something and said he would present the idea to his software company and maybe create some kind of business opportunity for us. How cool would it be if this discussion led to having a piece of a new business.

Movie Sets and Wedding Decorations

I have spent the greater part of my adult life in and around movie sets. Being in the business, I have seen too many a wedding where the wedding decorations would threaten the budget we had for some movies. The moguls in our business have a totally different mind set than most of us. They have a vision and to create that vision, some of them spare no expense. This is especially true if the wedding is for one of their daughters. Daddy’s little girls are prominent figures in the motion picture arena. Many have even been given roles in movies that were hurt by their presence. Enough said.

Burnaby Condo

People all around the world are so influenced by the silver screen. I always couldn’t understand how, no matter how poor a family in a movie was, they always lived in what seemed like a six thousand sq. ft. house. The yard always had a tree house and a garden of vegetables and very often room for horses, chickens and pigs. As far as I’m concerned, I think the whole world thinks we are a lot wealthier than we actually are. The reality is I would be a lot happier and more content living in a beautiful Burnaby condo than one of those huge houses that need so much attention anyway.

Money! Money! Money! It is so sad that this one entity on our wonderful planet has so much power. It’s why so many people starve, why so many people steal and very sadly, why many people kill. How did this happen? How did civilization come to exalt this one entity and practically relinquish our very souls to it? From the old days of shylocks to todays unsecured business loans, mortgages, car payments etc. we are slaves to this incredible force. None of us on this planet today will live long enough to witness it’s power diminish. I wish I had an answer. I pray to have an intelligent and just alternative to this small god, we are entrapped by.

Wedding Decorations

There is a very strong relationship between movie sets and wedding decorations. Both must be done in a relatively short period of time and both will be undone in even less time. They are both the epitomy of temporary. However, you wouldn’t exactly have a movie without a set and you certaunly wouldn’t want a wedding without decorations. Even though both are costly and short lived, both are seemingly vital to the task at hand.
On the other hand, the above is a great case for using nature as a backdrop. Shoot a scene in the mountains or have your nuptials on a beach. The problem with that is you’ll destroy the economy.

Wedding Cake Toppers

My, off-the-wall, niece comes up to me and says “hey unk you’re in the movie business. Do you think you know anything about creating any of those wedding cake toppers?” I told her I couldn’t make the connection. I wondered what made her think I had anything to do with stuff like that. She figured that if I were a creative person I could create one of those. Then as we got into it, it became a lot of fun. We ended up designing one together that represented all the traits of her and her husband to be.

My great aunt, quite a character, came to visit us in Southern California last winter to escape a rash of very cold weather she was experiencing in Canada. Actually, I drove up there to scout some locations for a short film I was involved in. I killed two birds with one stone and picked her up from her Burnaby condo and she rode home with me. When we got to the house, she began to cry. She said the house reminded her of the home she lived in with my great uncle who passed 15 years earlier. She said she felt a peaceful state of bliss there. Then we told her it was the same house. She broke down. Her 100th birthday was only three months away. We asked her to stay with us to celebrate the aupicious occasion together. Six months later her condo is up for sale.

Green Printing

There are times when I feel an overwhelming stigma of guilt connected to the fact that I sort of selfiishly look at the planet as a resource for my next shoot location. Rarely do I take it for the magnificent planet that it it is. When I hear about people who put the planet and all we inhabitants first, it magnifies my personal guilt. Case in point, Metropolitan Fine Printing, a Canadian company, showed the true meaning of the olive branch, in my eyes, when they converted their entire printing processes to green printing. How refreshing is it to witness such an unselfish and accomplished act? My hat is off to them.
